3 Unexpected Causes of Water Leaks in Homes

3 Unexpected Causes of Water Leaks in Homes
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Roof leaks, clogged lines, faulty plumbing, damaged pipe joints, and excess water pressure are obvious causes of water leaks and damage in many households. But are you aware of the unexpected culprits that can wreak havoc if left unchecked?

Landscaping mistakes, appliance accidents, and HVAC hazards are the silent troublemakers that catch homeowners off guard and cause significant water damage to their properties. In this post, we hope to empower you to watch out for the small, seemingly insignificant factors that can contribute to water leaks in your home.

  1. Landscaping Mishaps

Landscaping balances plants, flowers, trees, and other elements to create beautiful and inviting spaces. However, mistakes like improper grading, plant root intrusion, and damaged irrigation systems during such garden projects may cause unexpected water leaks. Over time, these leaks cause severe water damage, costing homeowners thousands of pounds on repairs.

When landscapers grade your garden sloping towards your home’s foundation instead of away, water collects near its base, causing leaks and structural damage. Similarly, plant and tree roots can sometimes grow and reach underground pipes and irrigation systems in their quest for water. And once they infiltrate your plumbing, they cause blockages, cracks, or even complete ruptures.

Regularly inspect and clean your gutters, downspouts, and drainage systems to remove blockages and ensure they function properly. You can also install protective barriers around underground pipes to stop root intrusion. Additionally, be mindful of the proximity of plants and trees to underground utilities during landscaping projects. Don’t plant trees with extensive root systems too close to pipes or irrigation lines. And if you suspect a water leak or notice water accumulating in your garden, contact a reliable Rochester plumbing service.

  1. Appliance Accidents

Dishwashers, refrigerators, and washing machines are the heart and soul of every household. But if you ignore regular maintenance, they can sometimes cause unexpected water leaks.

Take the washing machine, for example. The hoses that supply water develop cracks over time and leak water during the wash or rinse cycles. Additionally, the machine’s water pump or drainage system can malfunction, leaking water and flooding your utility room.

Dishwashers can also cause leaks if maintained poorly. Overloading the machine, using inappropriate detergent, or using a faulty seal door may leak water during operation. Moreover, clogged or damaged drainage lines may cause water backup that floods the room. Refrigerators, conversely, have ice makers and water dispensers that may develop faulty connections, causing leaks and damaging your kitchen or the appliance itself.

To prevent appliance-related water leaks, regularly inspect the hoses and connections of your appliances that use water. Look for signs of wear, damage, or leaks, and replace any faulty components promptly. You should also use the appliances as intended and clear out any debris or buildup in the drainage systems. Furthermore, consider scheduling periodic professional inspections to identify potential issues early on and address them promptly.

  1. HVAC Hazards

Condensation buildup, clogged drain lines, and faulty components may affect your home’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, causing leaks and water damage.

Air conditioners, for example, cool the air by extracting moisture which then condenses on the evaporator coils inside the unit. Normally, a drain line removes condensation, but when it becomes clogged, excess condensation overflows and leaks as water into walls. Dirt, debris. Or algae can also block drain lines and cause water damage to walls.

A cracked condensate pan, malfunctioning valves, pumps, or sensors inside the HVAC system may allow water to escape and cause leaks. However, a qualified HVAC technician can help identify and rectify these faulty components, preventing water leaks and ensuring your systems perform better.

Don’t Let the Drops Fall

Never overlook the impact of landscaping mishaps, appliance accidents, and HVAC hazards on your home’s integrity. Stay vigilant and address these issues early on to save yourself the inconvenience and expense of dealing with water leaks. Similarly, simple actions like routine inspection and maintenance by professional Rochester plumbing services like PGM Plumbing and Heating can go a long way in preventing water leaks. Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed.
