How Do You Clear a House After Death?

Clearing the house after a relative dies can be emotional and a difficult task. It’s important to have a plan for how you’re going to dispose of the items left behind. Whether you’re clearing the house yourself or hiring a professional house clearance company. Below are some useful tips on clearing a house after death.

First, gather all the family members together. This will allow you to make decisions about what to keep and what to donate. As you go through the house, you can discuss the distribution of the items left behind. This can help prevent anyone from accidentally donating items that other family members may wish to keep.

Once you’ve made a list, move the items that are being kept and place all the items into one room of the house. It’s important to remove any financial documents and sentimental items prior to clearing the property.

How Can I Empty a House Quickly

There are a number of steps you can take to clear a house quickly. You can sell items online, donate them to charity, contact a local auction house or hire a house clearance company to clear the house for you.

If your immediate family resides in the same country, you could enlist their help. A collective group effort can clear a house in matter of hours, rather than days. This is by far the cheapest option for clearing a house after death.

You may want to consider contacting a local auction house if the house you are clearing has any of the following items, antiques, retro furniture, war memorabilia, paintings etc. auctions houses will not only sell the items on your behalf, but they also offer a collection service.

House Clearance Company

Contacting a house clearance company after the death of a loved one may not be the most pleasant of experiences. If you would prefer to distance yourself from the task of clearing the house, then a house clearance service is an excellent alternative.

A simple search for “house clearance companies near me” should provide you with plenty of options. Remember to ask if they are a registered waste carrier, this will ensure that the company your are hiring will dispose of any waste responsibly. To obtain a quotation most clearance companies will ask for a few photos of the items to be cleared. If the house is particularly large and there is considerable number of items, a home visit may be required.

Clearing Out a House After a Relative Dies

In certain situations where there is no will an executor usually a family member will be appointed. The executor must apply for a Grant of Probate which gives them the authority to organise the distribution of money, assets after paying any taxes and debts owed. Depending on the circumstances and if deceased has any family, a distance relative, friend or solicitor may be appointed as the executor. Probate house clearances can take up to a year from appointing an executor to applying for grant of probate.
