Are Wasps Building Nests on Your Tukwila Porch? Here’s What to Do

A A

When the weather warms up in Tukwila, many of us head outside to enjoy our porches. But you’re not the only one who loves hanging out there. Wasps do too. If you’ve noticed these buzzing bugs flying around or building nests in the corners of your porch, it’s time to take action. Here’s how to spot them, stop them, and stay safe, or get more info here if you need extra help dealing with them.

Why Wasps Pick Your Porch

Wasps look for places that are dry, safe, and close to food. That makes your porch a perfect spot. The roof keeps them protected from wind and rain. And nearby flowers, plants, or even food scraps can give them what they need to build a nest and grow their colony.

How to Tell If You Have a Nest

A wasp here and there isn’t always a problem. But if you see a lot of them buzzing in the same area, or spot a small papery ball under the eaves, you might have a nest. Don’t get too close, some wasps will sting if they feel scared or trapped.

Steps to Keep Wasps Away

You can make your porch less welcoming to wasps. Try these simple tips to keep your space sting-free:

Clean Up Food and Drinks

Wasps love sugary snacks and meat. After a picnic or barbecue, wipe down tables, toss food wrappers, and bring in pet food bowls. Even small crumbs or drops of soda can attract them.

Cover Garbage Cans

Make sure all trash bins have tight lids. Wasps are drawn to the smell of leftovers, even from inside the trash. Cleaning your bins every so often can also help.

Seal Up Small Holes

Wasps like to squeeze into tiny spaces. Check around your porch for cracks or holes in walls, siding, or window frames, and seal them with caulk.

Add Wasp-Repelling Plants

Some plants have smells that wasps don’t like. Try planting mint, basil, marigolds, or geraniums in pots around your porch. They look pretty and help keep bugs away.

Move Feeders Away from the Porch

Bird and hummingbird feeders are sweet-smelling snacks for wasps, too. Move them farther into your yard to keep the porch area less tempting.

Pick Up Fallen Fruit

If you have fruit trees nearby, pick up anything that drops. Rotted fruit can invite all kinds of pests, including wasps.

Check Early, Act Fast

In spring, look around your porch and roof for tiny starter nests, about the size of a golf ball. Wasps are easier to deal with before the colony grows. Never try to knock it down yourself; some wasps sting multiple times and may swarm.

Know Your Wasp Types

Not all wasps act the same. Some are calm, while others are more likely to sting. Common porch nesters include:

Paper Wasps – Make umbrella-shaped nests under ledges and door frames. Usually peaceful, but sting if bothered.

Yellowjackets – Very aggressive. They’ll sting more than once and can build nests underground or on your home.

Hornets – Big and bold. Their nests can be high up in trees or near homes. They protect their nests fiercely.

What to Do If You Find a Nest

If you do spot a wasp nest, stay calm and don’t try to spray or knock it down yourself. Wasps will defend their home if they feel threatened. Instead, call a local pest expert who knows how to safely remove nests and help stop them from coming back.
